Today you’ll go back to ancient times. At the Pont du Gard – an aqueduct dating back to the 1st century, you’ll discover an architectural masterpiece and one of the most beautiful Roman constructions in the region. The Pont du Gard lies 70km from L’Estelle en Camargue. From the Pont du Gard, you’ll drive to Arles (37 km), a former Roman town on the fringe of the Camargue. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Arles has several monuments worth visiting: the amphitheatre, the Roman theatre, the Saint Trophime cloister, the Constantin baths, the Alyscamps necropolis, and the Roman battlements. For contemporary art enthusiasts, we recommend a detour to the “Maison d’Arles” where Maja Hoffmann, Swiss art collector and heiress of the Hoffmann-La Roche pharmaceutical company, has established an interdisciplinary centre for culture. The centre piece is a striking aluminium tower designed by star architect Frank O’Gehry. Allow a good half hour for your return journey to the hotel (35 km).
